The last episode of Sherlock Holmes has just aired on PBS.  I want to spend some time geeking out on this amazing British show.  Yes, there are no space ships, robots, or zombies, but, this show has resurrected an old British literature character and brought him up to modern world standards while still keeping the essence of the old Sherlock Holmes.

During my college years, I was able to travel several times to England, which I consider my second home. So, just off topic; if one day I ever meet that British man of my dreams, I will gladly pack my bags and head to England. However, I digress. ;) On one of my trips to England, I had the chance to visit the “home” of Sherlock Holmes. That’s right 221 b Baker Street. It had all kinds of Sherlock type objects you could play with; his pipe, fiddle, and scientific experiments. To visit this fictional home of such a famous literary character allowed me to have a renewed interest in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works. To me, the new BBC show has brought to life this character - just like the museum did.

Benedict Cumberbatch plays the famous Sherlock Holmes. Along with Martin Freeman (who is also cast for Bilbo in the upcoming Hobbit film)who plays the every faithful sidekick Dr. Watson. There are many things that still stay true to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s story. A few modern twists have been added such as: Sherlock uses a cell phone, the internet, and Dr. Watson blogs about their adventures. Gone is the every famous cap of Sherlock and faithful pipe. this Sherlock hates the cap and is trying to get off cigarettes!

Cumberbatch is the perfect choice to play Sherlock. Having the experience of playing intelligent yet haunted characters, he was quite able to handle the complex character of Sherlock. In fact, we start to see a more human side to him, but, without losing what has always made Sherlock a lasting literary character which is his high intellect and had bad people skills.

Martin Freeman plays Dr. Watson the an intelligent and loyal friend to Sherlock. I often felt that in the  is older remakes of Sherlock Holmes. Often type casted as a half-witted sidekick this Dr. Watson looks after Sherlock, often times bringing him back down to earth by reminding him to thank people or by sharing a rare laugh with him. He truly cares for Sherlock despite Sherlock’s difficulty in relating with his friend.

Series 2 had some amazing shockers for fans. Evil villains return to test Sherlock and to make him face his own humanity. Dr. Watson is not left out of the mix, as his faith and loyalty to Sherlock are stretched to the limit. I will not go into details, but the last episode has a major cliff hanger. I can’t wait for the new series to start, which could take awhile. If you haven’t watched Sherlock Holmes, I highly suggest you do. Both Series 1 and 2 are available on DVD.  You will not be disappointed.
