The greatest moment for me this week was seeing my nephew watch Star Wars. Not trying to get all sappy here, but it just about made me cry. I have to say I had no idea how I was going to introduce him to this wonderful universe. He’s three, so his attention span is about as long as a sneeze.  I found a way though, that will probably make many of you slightly upset. I’m sure some of you are going to send me tweets or emails screaming your disappointment at what I did, but  I accomplished my goal and at least he knows a little about Star Wars.

Before my nephew arrived, I purchased the necessary toys to spoil him with, or at least toys that I could play with if he didn’t want them: lightsabers and action figures.  I figured this was a decent way to start his Star Wars education. Little did I realize, that the Darth Vader action figure I purchased for him would scare the crap out of him. This threw me off guard. Not only is he too afraid to play with Darth Vader, but now his Mom thinks I’m trying to give her kid nightmares. The only good thing that came out of this is that I now have a new Darth Vader action figure.

Full of disappointment,  I sorta of abandoned my plan to introduce him. However, an opportunity came along, which was perfect.  My nephew desperately wanted to watch Peter Pan with me. I thought I might puke if I had to watch that movie again, so, I pulled out Lego Star Wars: The Padawan Meance. My prayers were answered!

I hear you screaming in the background, clutching at your chests, and banging your head against the wall. Hear me out!  I had to do what I had to do. His Mom wasn’t going to let me show him Darth Vader on the screen, so I choose Legos to introduce him and it worked. He loved it. He laughed at R2D2, little Han Solo, and loved the space ships. At one point, he turned to me and said that green alien talks funny meaning Yoda. We watched it seven times in one day. The kid loved it.

This little movie was meant for children. It’s just the right length, has plenty of slap stick humor, and it featured a lot of R2D2, which for most children is their favorite character. One day when he is older, we will sit down and watch Star Wars: A New Hope, but for now at least he has some knowledge of Star Wars. Mission Accomplished.

I can’t wait to introduce him to the Originals, Prequels, and the Clone Wars, but for now at least he knows who R2D2 and that Jedi’s use lightsabers. That is good enough for a three year old. Say what you like, at least he is going around the house saying; “I want to watch Star Wars!” Just melts my heart.
